Students are to write a report or complete an experiment based on their topic choice. 

Please note that we will schedule each student for a specific date to present their work. The last presentation to be presented by April 10th, 2017

Dans la zone culturelle autochtone de la côte nord‑ouest, les températures sont modérées. En janvier, la moyenne est constamment au-dessus du point de congélation, tandis qu’en juillet, la moyenne est inférieure à 18 °C. Située dans la forêt pluviale côtière, la zone reçoit d’abondantes précipitations. Avant l’arrivée des Blancs, la nourriture était abondante. Une variété de fruits, de bulbes et d’autres plantes fournissaient des éléments nutritifs importants. Et, surtout, on pouvait toujours compter sur les grandes remontes de saumons du Pacifique, nombreux lors de leur migration annuelle. 

Il y a deux tribus principales. Dans le Nord, les Tlingits habitaient de la pointe nord‑ouest de la Colombie‑Britannique, aussi du sud‑ouest du Yukon jusqu’ à la côte sud de l’Alaska. Les Haïdas vivent sur l’archipel Haida Gwaii. Le tlingit et le haïda sont des langues isolées et uniques.  

  

Malgré les différences entre les tribus, ils ont les arts en commun qui fait partie de la vie quotidienne. La sculpture et la peinture sur bois, les totems en particulier, sont les produits les plus réputés de la culture de la côte nord‑ouest. Dans toutes les régions, la possession de sculptures et d’objets d’art décoratif était un signe de richesse et dénotait le statut social. 

Les Autochtones de la côte nord‑ouest se sont toujours opposés aux politiques et aux pratiques qui réduisent leurs droits ancestraux et laissent leurs revendications territoriales en suspens. Les Premières Nations de la côte, comme les Nisga’a et les Haïdas, avec les nations de la zone intérieure de la Colombie‑Britannique, continuent de défendre la reconnaissance des droits des Autochtones à leurs terres ancestrales.
